Shirt Sleeve Religion

I worked with a Jewish gentleman who said he didn''t mind that people had faith, just as long as they didn''t wear it on their shirt sleeves. I asked him if he was a participant in the rites of Judaism. He said yes. I then reminded him that the Old Testament priests wore scriptures on their wrists AND on their foreheads. I said, "that seems to me like wearing your religion on your shirt sleeve does it not?." He stared at me at a rare loss for words.. but cordial nonetheless.  Later on when he was yammering on about the rights of homsexuals (although he was not one) he considered him as self a defender of "civil" liberties. He seemed supremely concerned that they not be offended in any way.  It was about then that I asked him at some point if he could refrain from using the The Lord''s name as a curse word which was offensive to me. I figured for someone who did not like hearing about Jesus, it was sure odd that he said his name in every other sentence. I said I honor the Name of Jesus and his Memory and would appreciate it if you would be more respectful in regard to his name. To his credit, he was a gentleman about it, and I never heard him use the Lords name as a curse again! Regardless of popular opinion you can have cordial conversations about religion even if you disagree. That is what  America is about to discuss , and perhaps disagree about ideas and directions without fear of reprisal or persecution. I worked with this gentleman for 6  more years after that initial discussion and were always able to have cordial conversations about anything and everything. I had great respect for him. I wish we as Americans could come to the point to recognizing that just because we have differing opinions and convictions is no reason to be beligerrant(sp?) but these differences should be discussed, not avoided. If there is right in an argument is will eventually rise to the top of great ideas.  At the worst case people can always agree to disagree.  This free and open exchange of  lawful ideas (as opposed to unlawful ideas that espouse violence and threats) is what makes America  a beautiful beacon in the dark,  long, bloody history of man's brutality to his fellow man.
